Unfair Representation in Congress?
Why are we getting unfair representation in Congress? The federal government of the United States is dominated by lawyers. Why? Is it because law schools train them to become politicians? In law school they learn to debate, they learn to fight against the other side, they learn to "dig up dirt" on their opponents and their opponent's clients, they learn to "sell" themselves to clients and judges by talking about how good they are. It seems like law school is ideal training for politics! The problem is in representation. The Congress of the United States comprises the House of Representatives and the Senate. There are 435 Representatives and 100 Senators for a total of 535 members of Congress. The 109th Congress included 228 members who hold law degrees and 217 members whose former occupation was in law. With the exception of former state legislators, lawyers were the dominant professional group. This is not fair representation for the people of the United States. When a lawyer is assigned to be the chair of a committee that they have no experience in, such as a committee on manufacturing - where is the logic in that? If you attended a lecture on parenting given by someone that has never been a parent, how effective would the lecturer be?. He can know quite a lot about parenting from reading and studying, however, he can't really "get it" if he has never been a parent. Thus we need more elected officials that have business backgrounds and other areas of experience in order to get fairer representation in Congress. America deserves to elect more non-lawyers to Congress!
