Protect America
To protect America it requires a strong defense!
None of us desire war, yet we live in a troubled world where wars do occur, and it takes manufacturing capability to fight a war. For example, in 1939, prior to World War II, our arms manufacturing plants were producing $1.8 Billion dollars worth of military related equipment per year. A few short years later, in 1943 during the war, our country was producing $88.2 Billion dollars of military equipment. We won the war, in large part, because we were able to produce the needed war materiel.
How were we able to achieve this incredible increase in production? It wasn’t from the producers of military equipment alone, for there was no way they could have done it. But rather it was from the manufacturers of consumer and commercial goods changing their production to war-time goods.
Companies such as Singer Sewing Machine changed from making sewing machines to making the Norden Bomb Sight for the U.S. Air Force. Ford Motor Co. produced bombers in their plants instead of cars. Other companies produced guns, bullets, nap sacks, shoes, rations and medical supplies etc. At that time in history we had the productive capability to be able to change our consumer goods manufacturing over to the needed military goods.
"God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to guard and defend it."
-Daniel Webster
Today we are witnessing the de-industrialization of America. Under the banner of free trade, company after company are either shutting down or moving their manufacturing plants to China to take advantage of the incredibly low-cost labor. Now, if we are faced with a major war we will not have the manufacturing capability to fight the war.
In not too many years, if not already, we could find that our country has become so de-industrialized that it would take many years to rebuild Americas manufacturing capability back up to where we could fight a major war. Today, if we were to find ourselves caught in a major war, we would have to depend on other countries to supply us with much of the needed military equipment. Under the current trend that country would be our “war-threatening” trading partner, China.
We must ask ourselves, what would have happened in World War II if we had had to depend on Japan or Germany for our military equipment needs?
