Leadership in the USA

Has leadership failed America?

Definition of leadership

A simple definition of leadership is the ability to affect human behavior by guiding, directing, or influencing people in order to accomplish a mission or move toward a goal.

Based on the above definition of leadership - political leadership may be defined as the following: "the ability to influence people to accomplish the mission of getting elected".

People might say that "getting elected" is where leadership ends with many of our elected officials!

Toxic leadership, however, has found its way into the political mainstream of America.

Leadership ethics

Much has been written recently about leadership ethics in both business and politics. The study of human behavior and the weakness of the human condition are at the heart of the ethics challenge in America today. The egos desire for power as well as the egos tremendous fear of the loss of power and control have led many down the path of unethical behavior, sociopathic behavior and even psychotic behavior.

In the political arena, unethical behavior in the workplace has come to be regarded as the norm. There seems to be a sense that political leaders are "morally special" in a political world where breaking the rules is recognized as part of the game.
