Gas at the pump - a breakdown of prices!

According to The U.S. Department of Energy in May 0f 2008 the average price of gas was $3.77 per gallon. 75% paid for the crude oil , 10% was the cost to refine the oil into gasoline, 5% was used to market and distribute the gas, and 10% paid for federal, state and local taxes.

Thus, out of the 3.77

38 cents were for taxes

19 cents were for distribution and marketing (which includes the gas station’s share)

38 cents was for the cost of refining the crude into gasoline

$2.83 went to the oil companies to pay for the crude oil.
