WWII Manufacturing

Non defense manufacturing won the war!

WWII manufacturing - defense manufacturers were a small part!

Prior to WWII U.S defense spending was around $2 billion. If defense contractors were working one 40 hour shift per week prior to the War, they could produce 4.2 times that output if they ran their plants 24 hours, 7 days a week. Thus the maximum they could produce was 8-9 $billion in defense materiel if they ran at full capacity.

From 1943 – 1945, however, the United States spent between $67 billion and $83 billion each year for defense. Where did the extra billions in war materiel production come from?

The rest had to come from non- defense related industry that was converted over to producing military materiel during the war. Pre-war non-defense manufacturers were absolutely the key to U.S. success in WWII.

History tells us that consumer and commercial oriented non-defense U.S. manufacturers have been instrumental in securing our freedom!

Thousands of these manufacturers converted to military materiel producers during WWII . They were responsible for as much as 80% of the wartime materiel production and were greatly responsible for winning the war.
